Mikey Madison won best actress for her breakthrough performance in Anora, a victory that came over the category favorite, Demi Moore (The Substance).

Indie Film Wins Over Blockbusters

Sean Baker, the director behind Anora, took home Oscars for best director, best original screenplay, and best editing. During his best director speech, Baker delivered a heartfelt plea for preserving the theatrical experience.

Adrien Brody secured his second Academy Award, winning best actor for his portrayal of a visionary Hungarian architect in The Brutalist.

Kieran Culkin claimed the first award of the evening for A Real Pain, edging out Australian actor Guy Pearce. Later, Zoe Saldaña celebrated her first Oscar win for best supporting actress in Emilia Pérez, rounding off an already stellar awards season.

Host Conan O’Brien kicked off the show with his signature brand of sharp, sarcastic humor.

Elsewhere, Morgan Freeman paid tribute to two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, who passed away just four days earlier.

“This week, our community lost a giant, and I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman,” Freeman said.
