Effects of overeating on brain health : A European study has discovered that just five days of overeating can condition the brain for long-term unhealthy eating habits.
Researchers in Germany enlisted 29 healthy men in their 20s to examine the effects of a high-calorie diet on brain function.
One group consumed ultra-processed foods — including chocolate bars, brownies, and chips — for five days to intentionally increase their calorie intake.
Ultra-Processed Foods and Their Role in Unhealthy Habits
The participants were compared to a control group following a regular diet.
Just five days of overeating led to increased liver fat and impaired insulin function in brain pathways linked to motivation and decision-making.
The findings indicate that short-term overeating may condition the brain for long-term unhealthy eating patterns.

“It’s important to cut back on ultra-processed foods,” said dietitian and nutritionist Jemma O’Hanlon.
“Right now, ultra-processed foods make up 42% of the average Australian diet — a number that’s far too high.”
“Research is showing that these foods can be addictive,” she added.
Experts recommend consuming ultra-processed foods only occasionally and in small portions.
