Measles alerts in Western Sydney : Health officials in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland have issued measles alerts following the detection of a case in Western Sydney and at Gold Coast Airport.
According to NSW Health, the case involves an individual who arrived in Sydney on a flight from Vietnam, a country currently experiencing a measles outbreak.
While the individual was not infectious during the flight, NSW Health advised people who visited the same locations as the person to stay vigilant and monitor for symptoms.
Measles Alerts Issued for Western Sydney and Gold Coast
Individuals who visited Family Doctors Berala on Saturday, January 18, between 10:00 am and 11:15 am are advised to monitor themselves for signs of infection.
Queensland Health also reported that a person with measles was unknowingly infectious while on the Gold Coast.
They advised that anyone who traveled on Qantas flight QF596 from Sydney Domestic Airport to Gold Coast Airport, which landed at 9:30 pm on January 17, should be alert for symptoms.
Measles Case Linked to Arrival from Vietnam
The individual was also present at Gold Coast Airport until approximately 10:15 pm.
Gold Coast Health confirmed that the case was acquired overseas but did not specify the country.
Measles is an extremely contagious disease spread through tiny droplets released by coughing or sneezing. It typically causes fever, coughing, runny nose, sore eyes, and a red, spotty rash that appears a few days later.
Symptoms usually begin 7 to 10 days after exposure but can take up to 18 days to appear.
βWe urge the community to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations. Everyone should verify their protection against measles, which is highly contagious,β said Dr. Mitchell Smith, Director of Public Health for the South Western Sydney Local Health District.

βAnyone born after 1965 must ensure they have received two doses of the measles vaccine, especially before traveling overseas. Measles outbreaks are currently occurring in several regions worldwide,β he added.
Health officials emphasized that vaccination is the most effective way to protect individuals and the community from measles.
