Airport disruptions Australia : As the Australia Day long weekend approaches, travelers are being advised to anticipate disruptions at major airports due to a strike involving over 1,000 ground workers.

Ground staff employed by aviation services company Dnata commenced a four-hour walkout today at Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne airports amid an ongoing dispute over wages and working conditions.

While Qantas domestic flights will remain unaffected, the airline has assured that contingency plans are in place for its international flights departing from Sydney Airport.

However, 20 other major international airlines, including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Delta, are expected to face disruptions.

Transport Workers Union national secretary Michael Kaine stated on Today this morning that industrial action is being taken as a “last resort.”

“There will be disruptions today—that’s the reality of industrial action. Travelers can expect delays at Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane airports, with flight schedules likely to be impacted,” he said.

Dnata Workers Demand Fair Pay and Better Conditions

“These workers have reached their limit. They are demanding a fair deal for themselves and their families.”

According to Michael Kaine, employees of Dnata, a subsidiary of Dubai’s Emirates Group, have been negotiating with the company for a year to secure better pay and working conditions.

“They have been waiting for improvements in their pay and conditions since June last year. Now, they’ve had enough and have taken the courageous step of initiating industrial action to secure a fairer deal for themselves and their families.”
