St Marys factory fire : Hundreds of workers and residents near a large factory fire in western Sydney are being evacuated as the blaze, intensified by gas cylinders and chemicals, becomes increasingly dangerous.

The fire erupted at a recycling facility on Christie Street in St Marys shortly after 1:45 PM and escalated into a raging inferno by 3 PM.

LPG gas canisters seem to be fueling the flames, which are soaring up to 60 meters high and releasing thick plumes of smoke into the surrounding areas.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has established an 800-metre exclusion zone, prompting the evacuation of workers and residents.

“Those outside the exclusion zone are advised to keep doors, windows, and vents closed due to potential smoke exposure,” FRNSW stated.

Over 100 firefighters and more than 20 trucks are actively battling the blaze, with efforts concentrated on safeguarding nearby properties.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry stated, “Large quantities of chemicals and gas cylinders are involved, detonating with explosive force.”

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) described the gas canisters as a major hazard, making the operation “extremely dangerous and complex.”

“Given the severity and hazardous conditions of this fire, we are unable to get enough water close enough to be effective,” FRNSW added.
