Melbourne Zoo is examining the sudden and unforeseen passing of Kimya, a 20-year-old gorilla.
In a statement, the zoo expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Western Lowland Gorilla, who died this morning.
Kimya arrived at Melbourne Zoo in 2013 from the Taronga Conservation Society and quickly formed a strong bond with Otana, a 24-year-old male gorilla.
In 2015, the pair welcomed their offspring, Kanzi, the first gorilla born at Melbourne Zoo in 15 years.
